Surface Preparation

The surface must be fully cured, structurally stable, level, even, clean & free of paints, contaminants such as dirt, dust, loose material, oils & chemicals. Concrete surface must be cured for a minimum of 3 days prior to Zemcoat application.

The use of a level bar is essential to ensure the levelness and/or plumbness of the surface. For painted surfaces, acid etch or abrade paint to ensure proper bonding. Prior to application, Dampen surface that can be plastered one section at a time with clean water using a sponge or a roller brush. For outdoor applications & during extremely hot weather conditions, such as noontime or summer, wet substrate very well and more frequently before applying skimcoat.

How to use Zemcoat Skimcoat – Original

1. Mixing
In a clean plastic pail, mix clean water with Zemcoat. Mixture should attain a smooth, creamy & lump-free consistency. Use a mixing torque for best results. Mixing time: 2 – 3 minutes. Let mixture rest for 15 mins. Mix again briefly before use.

Mixing Ratio
Water + Zemcoat Water Resistant

Caution: Use only non-absorptive materials as mixing base (plastic pail or G.I. sheet). If absorptive materials such as plywood, wooden box, gypsum board, fiber cement board or cardboard is used, it will affect the chemical properties of the product, which can result in bonding failure and poor product performance.

Caution: Never add additional water after final mix. Otherwise, it will change and alter
the consistency & properties of the mix.

2. Application
While the substrate is still damp, apply Zemcoat to desired application thickness (0 – 5mm) using a steel trowel. Pot Life: 3 – 4 hours. Setting time: 30 minutes.

  • For application areas that need minor surface corrections, Zemcoat Original (2-5mm application thickness) is applied before Zemcoat Super Fine (0-2mm application thickness).
  • When using variants with the same color, apply Zemcoat Super Fine just before Zemcoat Original is about to set.
  • When using variants with different colors, apply Zemcoat Super Fine only when Zemcoat Original has already set.

TIP: Zemcoat has set when the finish looks matte. If needed, sprinkle a small amount of water when the surface is about to set, then smoothen to the desired finish.

3. Finishing

Zemcoat Skimcoat must receive further finish of paint or sealer as protection. Zemcoat Skimcoat requires a minimum of 3-5 days curing prior to the application of primer. This replaces the use of a concrete neutralizer.
