Tiling Solutions
     1. Can ABC Tile Adhesive be used directly after waterproofing?
If you use ABC Aquashield Plus cementitious waterproofing it is immediately ready to accept tile installations using ABC Tile Adhesive Heavy Duty (refer to Tiling Quick Guide).
     2. Is it feasible to tile over an existing wood parquet installation?
It is recommended to remove an existing wood parquet floor before installing tiles, due to the fact that some of the wood pieces may not be adhered properly to the concrete surface below. However, tiling over wood is possible, provided the surface is stable and structurally sound. Tiling over non-concrete surfaces always requires Redifix Primer prior to tile installation.
     3. Will ABC Tile Adhesive retain its adhesive strength if it is mixed with ordinary mortar?
We do not recommend ABC Tile Adhesive be mixed with ordinary mortar. By following correct application procedures and proper mixing ratios you will achieve the best quality use for all ABC Products.
     4. Can you mix different ABC Tile Grouts to achieve a different color?
Definitely not, grouts are blended and mixed using highly sophisticated factory mixing and dispersing equipment. To manually mix grouts will not disperse pigments properly and will just result in inconsistent shades and color migration. Our rigorous quality control procedures safeguard product consistency, meeting the strictest international standards.
     5. How can tile grout discoloration be prevented?
Follow these simple reminders: a. Use only non absorbent materials such as plastic pail or galvanized iron sheet as mixing base. b. Use the exact mixing ratio to prevent excess liquid in mixed grout. c. Follow the proper mixing procedure as seen on the instructions of the ABC Tile Grout packaging. d. If discoloration is due to an accumulation of dust, the grout lines can be cleaned by scrubbing the surface with soap and water.
     6. What is the cause of chipping tile grout lines?
Chipping grout lines are a result of inaccurate application. It is important to follow these reminders to ensure the proper application of tile grout. 1. Clean your grout lines before application. Use the proper tools (spatula, grout scraper) to remove excess tile adhesive and other loose or foreign matter along the grout lines prior to grouting. Excessive mortar and dirt will lessen the adhesion of the grout to the tile and surface. A clean grout line will ensure the tile grout to penetrate and anchor until the surface. 2. For durable tile installations a minimum joint width of 2mm is necessary for perfect tile alignment and proper grout spacing to guarantee strong adhesion for long lasting grout lines. A joint width is necessary to accommodate possible tile movement due to thermal deformation, surface shrinkage or tile expansion. If you want to waterproof your tile grout, use ABC Tile Grout Waterproofing additive for lasting protection and easy maintenance.
     7. What is the advantage of using ABC Biotech Grout?
ABC Biotech Grout contains anti-bacterial properties against mold and mildew growth. These products are best for use on areas that are frequently exposed to water where strict hygiene is observed such as kitchens and bathrooms. They improve sanitation and lower your maintenance costs for hygienic living.
     8. What causes cracking along grout lines?
Some typical reasons for cracks in grout are: - Before the advent of grouts, cement used as grout will normally crack. - Poor tile installation, i.e., tiles are not properly set. - Floor or structural movements. - Grout joint is too wide. Use of correct grout for specific widths is important. Use sanded grouts for joint width of 7 – 19 mm and regular grouts for joints between 3 – 6 mm. Lack of expansion joints. Provide polyurethane expansion joints 6mm apart or at corners between the wall and floor.
     9. What causes grout powdering?
Most often, powdering is caused by premature drying of grout during installation. One reason is that the grout was mixed on an absorptive surface such as wood or plywood. Grouts should be mixed on plastic pails or galvanized iron containers.
     10. Can you mix various grout colors to come up with a different shade or color?
Definitely not, grouts are blended and mixed using highly sophisticated factory mixing and dispersing equipment. To manually mix grouts will not disperse pigments properly and will just result in inconsistent shades and color migration.
     11. When do you start grouting?
Apply grout after newly installed tiles have set overnight.
     12. What causes grout discoloration?
- Improper mixing (the use of contaminated water, tools or containers.) To ensure proper mixing, mix in a plastic and allow to stand about 10-5 minutes, remix and then apply. - Contaminants coming from the painting works.
     13. Are there grouts specifically for floors or for walls?
Not in terms of floors being horizontal and walls vertical but more in exposure to pedestrian traffic, wear and tear. Normally, ABC recommends the use of dark colored. No matter how a floor is maintained, dirt and stains will show in a floor with light grouts.
     14. Why do installed tiles crack?
Many, many reasons. One is improper bonding of tile to the substrate. Another could be tile quality. Structural or floor movement is another factor. Ideally, one must study the site conditions very well even before choosing the tiles and deciding on the manner of installation. ABC offers a free pre-inspection service to contractors and homeowners to ensure proper advice on tile installation requirements.
     15. Can you install ceramic tiles over freshly laid concrete floor or topping?
Ideally, it is best to wait till the substrate has fully cured (28 days) prior to tile installation. In practice, contractors just wait at least seven (7). Use a thin-set tile adhesive to ensure proper curing and installation.
     16. Why do tiles delaminate?
Flexible floors, improper bonding, structural movements. These are just some reasons. Another common cause is the failure to notice the formation of film on the tile adhesive bed (meaning the adhesive is past its open time). To fully address this issue, it is best to consult the experts in tile installation so that all factors are considered.
     17. Can you install tiles over existing tiles?
ABC has a grade of tile adhesive called ABC Tile Adhesive Original which would enable you to install tiles over existing tiles. For even heavier traffic and extreme conditions, the use of a latex admixture such as ABC Redifix is recommended to be used in conjunction with ABC Tile Adhesive.
     18. Why use tile adhesive instead of the traditional sand and cement mortar?
This has been the subject of debate since the thin-set method of tile installation was introduced decades ago. In the Philippine setting, the use of tile adhesive is relatively new (less than 25 years) hence the degree of resistance among masons and contractors is even greater. As a general observation, large scale installations such as shopping malls, factory floors, commercial buildings and condominiums have discovered the economy, beauty and practicality in the use of pre-packed tile adhesive versus on-site sand and cement mortar mixing. The sieving of sand along with its attendant wastages and problem of waste disposal is enough to discourage contractors from using the traditional method. Moreover, advanced construction techniques have resulted in better prepared and level floors that thin-set is the only way to go.
     19. What are the advantages of using Multibond?
ABC Multibond has a formulation with body in comparison with its paste type adhesive counterparts. This allows for stable bonding corrections of minor surface imperfections for an even finish.
      Finishing Solutions
     1. Do you need to apply a primer before painting over Zemcoat?
A primer is not needed to be able to paint over Zemcoat because its low pH level makes it compatible with most masonry paints. Each paint manufacturer has its own primer designed for better adhesion of its paint. However, the advantage of using white Zemcoat under the primer is that it saves time and money. The silky smooth white finish it provides reduces the number of primer & paint coats to be applied on walls & ceilings. The less layers to be applied, the less material and labor cost you will incur.
     2. Can Zemcoat be used to achieve a concrete finish?
Yes, a concrete finish will be achieved by using Zemcoat thin plastering but because the product is designed to be used as a skimcoat, using a concrete sealer will protect it from weather exposure and the growth of mold and mildew. At the same time, a concrete sealer makes stains easier to clean.
     3. What is the purpose of bonding slurry?
Zembond as bonding slurry can be used for the following: a. Bond fresh mortar to old concrete, as well as to smooth raw concrete (beams, columns, etc) b. Eliminates concrete surface roughening c. Controls mortar’s water loss for proper curing d. Controls plasters temperature cracks
     4. What are the advantages for using Zembond as additive for plaster?
a. Increases bonding of mortar to masonry wall or raw concrete b. Improves bonding strength between new & old plaster or concrete c. Prevents shrinkage cracking d. Reduces brittleness of concrete e. Improves water resistance f. Improves compressive & tensile strength g. Increases abrasion resistance h. Eliminates concrete surface roughening i. Controls mortar’s water loss for proper curing j. Controls temperature cracks on concrete topping k. Reduces dust build up on concrete topping
     5. What are the solutions to prevent concrete hair line cracks due to shrinkage?
If hairline crack is due to shrinkage it can be remedied by using Zemcoat.
      Waterproofing Solutions
     1. Can we apply Aquashield using a spray or roller?
No, the Tampico Brush is the best & fastest tool used to apply Aquashield. This flexible cementitious waterproofing must be applied in two coats and spread in a paint-like manner for total coverage. The coats have to be applied in two directions – horizontal and vertical, to form a weave like coating to ensure flexibility to bridge hairline cracks.
     2. Can Aquaplug dry while immersed in water?
Yes, Aquaplug can dry while immersed in water because it is a rapid -setting hydraulic compound. It can stop running water, seal leaks and seepages through concrete or masonry floor or walls.
     3. What is the minimum gap for Aquaplug?
In order for Aquaplug to properly fill the gap it needs to be able to adhere and anchor to the concrete surface. If the gap is too small for the product to adhere to, the gap must be chiselled creating a bigger opening for Aquaplug to penetrate the opening and seal the gap completely.
